THE DENTAL CARE CRISIS AMONG LOW-INCOME ADULTS IN WISCONSIN

Dental care is an essential component of overall health and well-being. Despite its importance, many low-income adults in Wisconsin face significant barriers to accessing dental services. This issue is particularly pronounced among minority groups and individuals with disabilities. Low-income adults in Wisconsin often struggle to afford dental care. The cost of dental procedures, a lack of insurance coverage, and limited availability of low-cost dental clinics contribute to their difficulties. Without regular dental check-ups, these individuals are at higher risk for dental diseases, which can lead to severe health complications. Minority groups in Wisconsin face additional challenges in accessing dental care. Language barriers, cultural differences, and systemic discrimination exacerbate their difficulties. Research has shown that African American, Hispanic, and Native American communities have higher rates of dental diseases compared to their white counterparts. These disparities are often rooted in socioeconomic inequalities and a lack of culturally competent care. Poor dental health can lead to a myriad of health problems. Untreated cavities and gum diseases can result in infections, tooth loss, and chronic pain. More severe conditions, such as oral cancer, can go undetected without regular dental visits. Moreover, poor dental health is linked to systemic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory infections. The lack of dental care also affects individuals’ social and economic well-being. Dental problems can lead to difficulties in finding and maintaining employment, as oral health is often perceived as a reflection of overall health and hygiene. Furthermore, chronic dental pain and disfigurement can diminish self-esteem and social interactions, contributing to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. BACKGROUND

More Smiles Wisconsin (MSW) was founded in 2009 by two area dentists, under its previous name, Madison Dental Initiative. The clinic began as a volunteer organization whose sole mission was to provide dental care to those in need. During the clinic’s infant years, care was provided one evening per week via volunteer dentists equipped with a mobile unit, a portable x-ray, and donated dental supplies. Through the implementation of Medicaid billing, grant writing, and foundation / community support, MSW is now a five operatory dental clinic occupying over 2,000 square feet of space on Madison’s east side. The clinic is open full-time and employs a dental team to provide care. MSW still utilizes and relies on volunteerism to help offset the costs of providing charitable care. In 2024, after nearly 15 years of being located inside of the Salvation Army shelter, MSW relocated to Mendota Street, roughly 3 miles east of the old location. MSW’s long-standing partnership with the Salvation Army did not end but is simply on hold while the Salvation Army gears up for reconstruction of its own building. Due to space limitations and need for growth, MSW made the temporary move to 1320 Mendota Street in March of 2024. We are anticipating that we will return to cohabitating with the Salvation Army again to provide services by 2028.
